I’ve been scrolling tonight, taking in the events in Mexico and reflecting on what I truly know about the country and its people which, in many ways, is very little, yet in other ways, I have learned a lot.Over the years, Barry and I have had some incredible experiences traveling to Mexico. The people we’ve met have been overwhelmingly kind and hospitable. I think back to the time we were invited into a local family’s home. Our son, still a young boy then, played soccer on the coblestone street and up on their rooftop while a beautiful meal was being graciously prepared for us in a stone oven.We spent a day helping at an orphanage and witnessed the resilience and joy of children who had so little, yet smiled so easily. We became friends with a young woman who had worked hard since she was very young to help pay for the care of her sister with disabilities.After COVID, when we returned, we spoke with a young man who took the bus every single day to the hospital to bring oxygen home to keep his mother alive.Spending time with these people reminded me that, at its core, what matters is the same everywhere, family, love, sacrifice, hope.Tonight, as I looked through photos from our trips, I came across a picture I took of a Mexican flag while on a hike. As I stared at it, I felt reassured. The stories I’ve heard over the years, stories of resilience, sacrifice, and community, are reflected in that flag.Their lives are different from ours. In many ways, harder, scarier and more uncertain. But I deeply admire their sense of community, what family means to them, and how appreciating the small things still holds such importance.February 22nd was a terrible day in Mexico’s history, one that will have repercussions many of us as tourists or expats may never fully understand.
